Richard Anderson

21-Year Survivor

Richard Anderson sustained his traumatic brain injury in 2004 when he was struck by a car as a pedestrian while on vacation at the Jersey Shore.  In the aftermath of his injury, he looked for support and ways to give back to the community. He became involved with the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey, attending the Council for the Head-Injured Community (CHIC) Advocacy Group, which was later renamed VOICES.  Richard is now the Chairman of VOICES and is also a member of the BIANJ Board of Trustees.  Richard is passionate about spreading awareness about brain injury, and frequently donates his time to speak to community groups about the causes and consequences of brain injury.

Richard stated “I had a desire to be able to assist people who have similar struggles.  Helping others in the world with brain injuries is a way of getting the strength that is needed to deal with what life gives you which was not asked for.  With my decision to join BIANJ’s Board, a void in my life was filled. I plan to stay with BIANJ as long as it continues. Helping others is a blessing and gift from God.”

Richard is a lifelong resident of New York City.  He and his wife of 42 years, Rosemarie, are the proud parents of two daughters, Maria and Angelica, and four grandchildren.
